A Very 多読 Manual

I realized that tadoku may have been a little confusing earlier since all the information was spread around a bunch of old post so I am going to pool all that information into this post. This contest runs on twitter.

    1. Contest Months

The ReadMOD Tadoku contests runs during the months of January, April, July, and October. This means that the contest starts the second that the timezone you inhabit hits a contest month. example  January 1, 2012 00:00:00.  Contest rounds end on the last second of the month. Example January 31, 2012 23:59:59.
    1. Mediums and Values

You can read various types of media for the Tadoku contest. Each medium has a different points (points = Tadoku pages) per page value associated with it.  The following list will show you the viable mediums and points per page (ppp) values.

        • #book  : 1 ppp
          • #dr [6] – (double rowed) Japanese Only : 1.48 ppp
        • #manga : 0.2 ppp
        • #net : 1 ppp
        • #fullgame [1] : 0.1667 pps (points per screen) [2]
        • #game[3] :  0.05 pps [4]
        •  #lyric: 1 ppl (point per lyrics for whole song)
        • #subs : 0.2 ppm (points per minute)
        • #news : 1 ppp
        • #nico : 0.1 ppm
        • #sentences : Language dependent
    1. How to Register

Registering for Tadoku contests usually (unless I am unable to open them for some reason) starts 15 days before the start of the round and closes midway into the contest. Participants are restricted to 3 reading languages in order to ensure that they get to read extensively in each language.  When you sign up you will let the bot know you are registering by using the #reg tag followed by what languages[5] (separated with a semicolon) you plan on reading in. Example:

“@TadokuBot #reg #lang1; #lang2; #lang3″
If you only intend on reading  Japanese you simply submit “@TadokuBot #reg”. This will set your language to JP automatically.
If you only plan on reading 2 languages simply remove “; #lang3″ from the first example : “@TadokuBot #reg #lang1; #lang2″.  Participants that only plan on reading one language (that isn’t Japanese) simply remove everything behind #lang1.  If your attempt to register is successful the bot should send you back a message confirming that you have registered.
  • Setting a goal

You may set a goal as long as the register is open.  Simply tweet “@TadokuBot #target {number}“(minus the {}) to set your goal for this round. This may also be attached to your initial register tweet.
  • Submitting your read pages

Reading submissions, like registering, are handled by the TadokuBot. In order to submit your update to the bot you simply tell the bot how much(page, screens, minutes) you read and what medium it was. You are not required to do any page conversion, the bot will handle all that for you. Example:
“@TadokuBot 51 #manga”
Be very careful to section off other non-update related numbers with a semicolon.

If you forget this the bot will include that number in your update. Example:

“@TadokuBot 94 #book; Man Harry Potter book 6 is awesome!”
The example above is a shows the correct way to section off other numbers from an update. If the semicolon had not been placed the bot would read the update as 946 #book. Please don’t forget your semicolons.
You can submit however many updates you like at once provided that you separate each medium’s update with a semicolon. Example:
“@TadokuBot 51 #manga; 12 #book; 982 #sentences”

a. Submitting minutes

The #subs and #nico mediums require you submit the time watched. The syntax for that is HH:MM, H being hour and M being minutes. Example:
“@TadokuBot 01:50 #subs”
The colon must be present or the bot will ignore the update.

b. Submitting pages you re-read (repeats)

If you have previously something before but would still like to read it for the contest you must tell the bot how many times you have read the text. You receive half as many points for each read. So if this is your second time reading a book you would use the #second tag. Third time? #third etc (note: the repeats only go to #fifth) Example:
“@TadokuBot 80 #book #third”

c. Undoing a mistake

If you incorrectly submit an update you can undo it by using the #undo tag. The #undo tag deletes your last update and recalculates your score.  If you previously submitted a tweet with 10 updates and made a mistake in the 5th update you have to undo all the updates that followed that tweet AND that update (thats 6 undos). Example (for 3 undos) :
“@TadokuBot #undo; #undo; #undo”

d. Submitting for languages other than Japanese

Previous examples have shown the way to submit pages for Japanese language reading. If you want to submit pages for another language all you have to so is specify which languages the submission is for. To do this all you have to do is add the language tag to the end of that particular update. Example showing multiple language submission:
“@TadokuBot 15 #book #pt; 86 #net #ko”
    1. Checking your score/rank

You may view your current page count and rank at any time by viewing the ranking page.

多読Contest Round 3, The Register Awaits

It’s that time again! That’s right, the register is open and awaiting your tweets! Before you start trying to reg there has been a small addition made to the register. You may now tell the bot (instead of telling me) what languages you plan on reading for the completion.  Sample tweet:

“@TadokuBot #reg #zh; #it; #jp”

The above tweet would register you in the contest reading Chinese, Italian, and Japanese. Semicolons are only necessary if you plan on reading more than one language.  If you only plan to read one language simply tweet “@Tadokubot #reg #(insert language tag)“. Those of us who are only reading  Japanese just have to tweet “@TadokuBot #reg”.

As always I will be keeping a running list here but the super automatic list is available here.

An April Fools’ prank so great, it lasted 5 days

I wish I could call it an April Fool’s joke anyway…

The bot is finally working as it should and im ready to go live with it!

There is one syntax change that you must take note of. I previously stated that something like the following would be acceptable.

  • “@TadokuBot 1789 #book I read 3 books today in 1 sitting!”

This however is no longer the case. However what is acceptable is:

  • “@TadokuBot 1789 #book; I read 3 books today in 1 sitting!”

A semicolon must be put in between your update score update and the rest of your message. Other than that everything works as previously sated in the “for dummies” post.

Please wait until the new bot is put up (an announcement will be tweeted via TadokuBot) to start using the new update format. Sorry for the wait!

ITS LIVE

So that means 多読 start for me!

Slight inconvenience for our “Early Starters”

About an hour from now the kiwi New Zealand crew will be starting but the new bot is acting a little oddly at times so I’ll be putting the old bot up while i finish finding the problem.

What does this mean for you?
It means you won’t have the ability to input multiple updates per tweet nor can you put extra numbers in your update tweets. Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope to have it up sometime later today.

多読コンテスト Round 2 For Dummies

…or not since I’m horrible at explaining things. A lot of this is going to be the same as the old post, new parts will be larger and bolded.

Round 2 starts on 4/1/2011 0:00:00 your time and ends on 4/30/2011 23:59:59 your time

Updating your score

As in the first round, we shall be using the TadokuBot to update our score*.

The biggest changes here are :

  1. You can have multiple updates per tweet.

Place a semicolon between medium updates inorder to update multiple counts with 1 tweet.
    Ex: @TadokuBot 25 #book; 65 #manga; 36 #sentence
If you forget the semicolon get ready to use the #undo function
  2. Updates must be in a certain format.

  3. Updates must be in the following format “@TadokuBot [number] #[optional tag like dr or language tag] #[medium]“. Reasoning for this explained in number 3.
  4. You can have other numbers in your update tweets.

  5. As long as you follow proper format, you can put extra number in your updates now. So “@TadokuBot 1789 #book; I read 3 books today in 1 sitting!” will work just fine.
  6. Languages other than Japanese

  7. If you are reading a language other than Japanese you will have to let the bot know by including the languages tag before the medium.
    Ex.”@TadokuBot 542 #fr #sentences”
  8. Submitting reading times for Subs and Nico

Instead of calculating the minutes your self, you can now submit times using the following format “@TadokuBot H:MM #subs”. H being hour and MM being minutes. Seconds are ignored on purpose since they are worth 1/300th of a page in subs or 1/600th if its ニコニコ.

list of all the current tags

  • #book
    • #dr ( for Japanese use only)
  • #manga
  • #net
  • #fullgame
  • #game
  • #lyric
  • #subs
  • #news
  • #nico
  • #sentences
  • #undo
  • #[insert language here]
    • #fr – French
    • #de – German
    • #es – Spanish
    • #en – English
    • #kr – Korean
    • #th – Thai
    • #cn – Chinese
    • #it – Italian
    • #nl – Dutch
    • #pl – Polish
    • #el – Greek
    • #ru – Russian
    • #eo – Esperanto
  • #repeat

The rest of this is mostly copied from the last “how to” post.

The non medium tags explained
  1. #Undo will obviously be used when you make a boo-boo in your updating tweet. It will make it so that your last update never even happened. Usage is as follows: “@TadokuBot #undo I f’ed up” That last part is completely optional :p (Note: Please wait until the undo action takes place to update your score again)
  2. #Repeat was born from our new rule letting you re-read material for a smaller return (#fifth is the maximum) . Syntax goes like this: “@TadokuBot 200 #manga #fifth” #fifth could be #second or #third etc.
  3. #dr means double rowed and is to be used in case you have a book that is formatted like this. It gives a small boost (*1.48) to equal out the extra reading you are doing per page. #dr is only to be used with Japanese books and requires the #book tag to work. ( f’n BDH)

Where you stand

Q: “But Silent, how will everyone know my awesome score if I’m only tweeting what I’ve read in the last [insert time period]“

A: Fear not, everyone will know just how awesome you are because TadokuBot will tweet your completely calculated score [so you guys might want to follow it] when you update it. You can also always view the scores the old way on the ranking list(won’t be active until the competition starts).

(small note : the new system updates every minute)

* Currently working on another method of updating, hopefully will be up this weekend.

多読Contest Round 2, Register now open!

The register is open and waiting! The procedure is the same as last time “@Tadokubot #reg” minus the quotes. I’ll be keeping a list here but to view the super up to to date check here.
