Updates and Begging Cups

So I just pushed some updates for the app, the biggest of those being

  1. Your avatars show again!
  2. Twitter changed its API other day and I was still using one of the old calls. It turns out those pictures are pretty important.

  3. You may notice a form on left hand side of ranking page with a bunch of metal and material names in them. These are the new tiers.
  4. Participants are placed in theirs based on their reading history. This feature was added so that even if newer readers can’t compete with the higher level readers, they can still win their tier (or even better get promoted to the next tier~). I’ll add another post tomorrow showing the tiers, how they rank, and their ranges.

  5. I added the language sort back in.

However, it does not yet rank you by your reading in that language and I do intend on fixing that.

And that’s about all that’s worth mentioning.

Todo list: Undo in app (I swear I keep forgetting about this), Do something when you’ve met your goal (this too), Tweet when you get promoted to the next tier, fix ranking for language sort

Begging Cup

As you all may know, I am a jobless hobo college student so I’m usually pretty strapped for cash. The sever for the contest runs about 120~140 dollars a year and I would love it if you guys could help me out with the bill. We are completely fine for the rest of 2013 however without any help I will not be able to pay for 2014. Please donate anything you can, I would love to keep this contest going for as long as possible!

EDIT: I will keep a running list of donators here, If you don’t want to be listed let me know. I will also let you guys know when we’ve reached out goal.

Current status: 100% to goal!

The Return of Tadoku

That’s right, we’re officially back and the register is now open but before you run off to tweet at the bot there are a few changes you should know about.

You can use the application for all the things you would use the bot for however currently the undo function in the app is disabled

  • The contest starts on Jan 01, 2013 00:00:00 your time (timer lies) and ends Jan 31, 2013 11:59:59, your time
  • Before registering make sure the timezone in your twitter account is set, you won’t be able to register without it.
  • I thought I had more points but I’ve been up for far too long.
  • Enjoy tadoku!

If you have any questions you can post here, message me @lordsilent on twitter, or contact me in the irc channel at irc.rizon.net #ajatt (Japanese learners encouraged to join!).

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to crash.

On the -7th day of Christmas LordSilent giveth unto thee

The Return of the 多読 Contest!

and a swift, painless death.

Yes, that’s right, we’re FINALLY back. Sorry it took so long but my medical problems made coding (or any sort of deep thought) near impossible. Rest assured, I wouldn’t make you guys wait that long for nothing!

Whats new?

I gave the bot the web app treatment! Previously the bot was just a script that got ran every minute but now its a full blown app. What does that mean for you guys? Three things

1)The app is fully automatic. Even if I feel terrible or die, the contest will continue running as scheduled without my intervention as long as hosting bills are paid.

2)Contestants are now able to submit updates via the website. This feature is mostly for those who had trouble with the command line-y twitter submission method. Now you can just head on over to the website and submit your updates without any confusion.

updatemod

3)Graphs. I’ve been promising graphs since the first 2011 contest and the move over to rails (and not shit php) for the website makes that possible(read: easy).

tgraph

A few of us from the irc.rizon.net #ajatt irc chat will be running a week-ish long contest just to give the app/bot a nice test before we resume our regularly scheduled contest in January(unless we’re all dead).

多読コンテスト Round 2 For Dummies

…or not since I’m horrible at explaining things. A lot of this is going to be the same as the old post, new parts will be larger and bolded.

Round 2 starts on 4/1/2011 0:00:00 your time and ends on 4/30/2011 23:59:59 your time

Updating your score

As in the first round, we shall be using the TadokuBot to update our score*.

The biggest changes here are :

  1. You can have multiple updates per tweet.

Place a semicolon between medium updates inorder to update multiple counts with 1 tweet.
    Ex: @TadokuBot 25 #book; 65 #manga; 36 #sentence
If you forget the semicolon get ready to use the #undo function
  2. Updates must be in a certain format.

  3. Updates must be in the following format “@TadokuBot [number] #[optional tag like dr or language tag] #“. Reasoning for this explained in number 3.
  4. You can have other numbers in your update tweets.

  5. As long as you follow proper format, you can put extra number in your updates now. So “@TadokuBot 1789 #book; I read 3 books today in 1 sitting!” will work just fine.
  6. Languages other than Japanese

  7. If you are reading a language other than Japanese you will have to let the bot know by including the languages tag before the medium.
    Ex.”@TadokuBot 542 #fr #sentences”
  8. Submitting reading times for Subs and Nico

Instead of calculating the minutes your self, you can now submit times using the following format “@TadokuBot H:MM #subs”. H being hour and MM being minutes. Seconds are ignored on purpose since they are worth 1/300th of a page in subs or 1/600th if its ニコニコ.

list of all the current tags

  • #book
    • #dr ( for Japanese use only)
  • #manga
  • #net
  • #fullgame
  • #game
  • #lyric
  • #subs
  • #news
  • #nico
  • #sentences
  • #undo
  • #[insert language here]
    • #fr – French
    • #de – German
    • #es – Spanish
    • #en – English
    • #kr – Korean
    • #th – Thai
    • #cn – Chinese
    • #it – Italian
    • #nl – Dutch
    • #pl – Polish
    • #el – Greek
    • #ru – Russian
    • #eo – Esperanto
  • #repeat

The rest of this is mostly copied from the last “how to” post.

The non medium tags explained
  1. #Undo will obviously be used when you make a boo-boo in your updating tweet. It will make it so that your last update never even happened. Usage is as follows: “@TadokuBot #undo I f’ed up” That last part is completely optional :p (Note: Please wait until the undo action takes place to update your score again)
  2. #Repeat was born from our new rule letting you re-read material for a smaller return (#fifth is the maximum) . Syntax goes like this: “@TadokuBot 200 #manga #fifth” #fifth could be #second or #third etc.
  3. #dr means double rowed and is to be used in case you have a book that is formatted like this. It gives a small boost (*1.48) to equal out the extra reading you are doing per page. #dr is only to be used with Japanese books and requires the #book tag to work. ( f’n BDH)

Where you stand

Q: “But Silent, how will everyone know my awesome score if I’m only tweeting what I’ve read in the last [insert time period]”

A: Fear not, everyone will know just how awesome you are because TadokuBot will tweet your completely calculated score [so you guys might want to follow it] when you update it. You can also always view the scores the old way on the ranking list(won’t be active until the competition starts).

(small note : the new system updates every minute)

* Currently working on another method of updating, hopefully will be up this weekend.

A 多読 future

People from all over keep asking me “Hey Silent, is there going to be another tadoku??” and when I say people from all over im referring to about 3 people.  But to answer everyone’s question, yes I do plan on having more tadoku contests. When you ask? good question!  I have come up with the following schedule for the next year.

1. January

2. April

3. July

4. October

I think 2 months between contests should give people long enough to recover from the last contest and improve for the next contest. The next blog post will contain the rule changes so stay tuned.

Random note: It took me a month to write this blog post.

But some of us did a little better than others. ..BlackDragonHunt is our contest winner with a huge 2224 pages read over the last month! Congrats!

I hope this last month has been beneficial to everyone’s language acquisition quests and that you will continue to include reading in your future study plans. I am preparing plans for future tadoku contests so keep an eyeout for it!

P.S. Blog posts about your journey through the contest are encouraged.

Last Week!

The contest will end in one week (and a day) so try and finish strong!
